This sounds like something not working correctly with multiarch.  Check
/etc/dpkg/dpkg.cfg.d/multiarch to make sure i386 is listed.  if it's
not, run 'sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386'.

Removing sponsors since this doesn't need an upload to fix.

  I am not able to install wine using aptitude:
  wine1.4 : Depends: wine1.4-i386 (= 1.4.1-0ubuntu7) which is a virtual package.

  Also, I am on x86_64.

  $ sudo aptitude install wine
