Attached is a small gtk test program which can be run in 2 ways:

1) ./gtkbuildertest
2) LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0 ./gtkbuildertest


in the first case, the memory increases over time
in the second case, memory usage is constant

valgrind gives me:
