Ubuntu uses package seeds, so default live-build's Debian specific
configs will not work.

You can use config files provided in the livecd-rootfs package as per instructions here:

I have just competed amd64 precise build using above instructions
(slightly modified, e.g. execute the scripts instead of symlinking /
copying them as the names clash) but it did build the rootfs fine.

Can you reproduce the problems you are facing using the livecd-rootfs
scripts which use ubuntu seeds and ubuntu specific live-build configs?

  Fix is included in 3.0_a46-1, but this package is not in Precise yet.
