On a system with a Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4350 512MB DDR2 PCI-E HDMI/DVI-I/VGA card I upgraded from
Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 64-bit (with Linux 2.6.35-30-generic #54-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 7 18:41:54 UTC 2011 x86_64) to
Ubuntu Desktop 11.04 64-bit with Linux 2.6.38-10-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 2 21:32:22 UTC 2011 x86_64.

After selecting standard boot in the GRUB menu, I regularly get the
blank screen and I'm not able to log in.

If I select the recovery mode in the GRUB menu, I am able to choose
failsafeX and to log in to a GDM session.

Near the end of /var/log/Xorg.0.log I found:

Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Server aborting

Booting to the earlier version of Linux (2.6.35-30) does not help.

I would appreciate very much a quick solution or workaround as otherwise
I would need to revert to Ubuntu 10.10.
