jeremy-list, jukarimov, looking at the patch it isn't obvious to me why
this is the simplest fix. Not being familiar with ibus-pinyin, I'd like
to see input from upstream. You should be able to review and file a bug
at http://code.google.com/p/ibus/issues/list. If there is an existing
bug, or you file a new one, please update this bug with the new
information. I am going to unsubscribe ubuntu-sponsors for now, since
there is not anything actionable to do at this time. Once upstream has
settled on a patch, please resubmit, mark this bug as Triaged and
resubscribe ubuntu-sponsors.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: ibus-pinyin

  In the notification area, when the ibus-pinyin input method is selected, instead of a red Chinese character there is a black square with a red circle and diagonal line
  This problem wasn't in lucid before I upgraded, but it's in maverick.
