No, you "must" not do anything like that. However, as is usual, I urge
this package to get in through Debian, if you're willing to maintain it

Bug description:
  dirspec is a modern, and maintained, cross-platform implementation of
  the XDG Base Directory specification. It currently implements the base
  directory specification for POSIX and for Windows. In the near future,
  it will also include an implementation of the XDG User Folders, to
  easily query for the Music folder for a user on Ubuntu and Windows.
