The path was added because I'm concerned that PATH isn't necessarily available when running this through udev. There are multiple changes, but small enough that I don't feel it's worth a different bug/commit. Furthermore, both bugs are hinted at by the data provided in bug 824147; you see that the pipeline read dies most likely because tar isn't returning data (the second ltrace output), and the crash in the core file/backtrace is at line 319; which is the added 'if'.

The other things are additional issues found either in the comments in bug 824147, or from noticing that calling tclsh to run a binary is wrong no matter what ;)
