To clarify this a little further, maverick has both valac 0.9.7 and
"valac-0.10". The package as archived currently in Maverick, by
default, chooses valac-0.10 when building, which actually seems odd to
me. However, even forcing valac 0.9.7 to be used, it still fails to
build from source.
I have produced a preliminary package based on the brand new 0.1.21
release of gnome-dvb-daemon, and this does rebuild successfully under
Maverick. No patches, debian or ubuntu, were in 0.1.19 so none needed
to be migrated, though the debdiff for the upstream change is remarkably
large. I attached the results here.

Status in “gnome-dvb-daemon” package in Ubuntu: New
Bug description:
Binary package hint: gnome-dvb-daemon
While originally detected as failing on armel, it in fact fails to build on all platforms. It is written in Vala and is incompatible with current Vala releases, as per Maverick. The latest upstream, 0.1.20, is only updated to vala 0.9. So we may have some time before this is buildable and in sync with vala again.
