OK, sorry for ranting here rather than there :-)

Would it be approrpiate to cut and paste my mini-rant and Scott's
reasoned response across so that they are in the right place or is that
sort of cross-posting frowned upon?

Status in “boost-defaults” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed

Bug description:
The libboost-mpi1.40-dev package is missing from Lucid and libboost-mpi-dev depends on it.

Also libboost-mpi1.41-dev is missing from Lucid.
