@Geoff
Just a hint.

To avoid conflicts with the ubuntu main repository, avoid using the same
version number (as you did with evolution package) and also avoid
increasing the ubuntu version number (as you did with evolution-
indicator). This leads to lots of headaches when the official ubuntu
version changes.

With your current version scheme, it's impossible to automatically install evolution from your ppa.
It's necessary to manually download and install each package.

---

To avoid these problems, follow the debian specification and do this:
Add your own name and version after the official ubuntu version!

For example, if you patch the official package evolution_2.28.3-0ubuntu9,
put the version of your package as evolution_2.28.3-0ubuntu9+geoff1.

The evolution-indicator_0.2.8-0ubuntu1 would become:
evolution-indicator_0.2.8-0ubuntu1+geoff1

And increase it to evolution-indicator_0.2.8-0ubuntu1+geoff2 if you
improve the patch.

Anyway, that's just a hint!
Thanks for the initiative and great patch!

Bug description:
Among all applications currently integrated with the indicator-applet (Empathy/Pidgin, Evolution, Gwibber), Evolution is the only one without a close-to-tray functionality. This is inconsistent as it forces the user to leave it open in order to use the indicator-applet properly. Close-to-tray functionality has been implemented for Evolution before, so I guess it's possible:
