I too am plagued by this bug. My system locks up and my fans start
spinning full-powered when this process runs. Perhaps defaulting it to a
lower-priority nice level would remedy the issue?

A background silent update process shouldn't use 98% CPU. It makes system sluggish with no visible reason.
