msva-perl 0.2-2 appears to have a pretty serious incompatibility with gnome-session: http://bugs.debian.org/585506 https://labs.riseup.net/code/issues/2414

This issue appears to be resolved with the recent 0.3 release:

Since ubuntu uses gnome, it's probably a good idea to sync up version 0.3 of msva-perl so that the tool is functional for ubuntu users.
