The patch fixes LP #524366 (gzip -d fails with a CRC error on valid data) which occurs with particular files (see bug report) on some architectures (I think: i386 with sss3), this bug probably came to surface in lucid (and therefore appears as a regression) because of a change in libc6 (optimized memcpy for 32-Bit/ssse3 architectures).
