actuially figure a rebuild is planned - want to suggest if using a vlc
1.0.X source (currently 1.0.6) that a few small patches would be
appropriate

Most notably wmas decoding should be added to avcodec - diff I use here is attached.
Other more obscure  could include als support and h.264 packetizer
