I think we can keep this bug report closed. The issue of apt-xapian-
index paralyzing the machine has been solved. Many issues were
identified here and solved by aexl and others. So please file new bug
reports for further issues.
For apt-xapian-index taking 100-200 MB and keep running at full CPU for
several minutes on our machines I think there are two issues: 1) It is
not engineered in a resource-friendly fashion. I think it uses way to
much for what it achieves. This is an upstream issue. 2) It is totally
overkill and does not belong by default on the Ubuntu desktop. In my
ignorance I don't know of any feature that it brings (except maybe
collecting "popcon" statistics). But I should take this elsewhere than
in this closed bug report.

Binary package hint: apt-xapian-index
A background silent update process shouldn't use 98% CPU. It makes system sluggish with no visible reason.
