Even with 0.37 I am not sure if this bug is really fixed. It is not
hammering the hard drive like before, but it is still using 2 min of CPU
time (and 100 MB RAM) here.

A background silent update process shouldn't use 98% CPU. It makes system sluggish with no visible reason.
