I have a triple-core Phenom. It locked the system and wouldn't allow me
to do anything. It logged me out of Xchat sessions.

7201 root      30  10  180m 139m 1172 R   93  3.8   0:35.63 update-apt-
xapi   <- line from top, after it let me type top.

It took ten or so minutes.

I was really pretty scared that my drive was going bad. . and it's less
than a year old.

Binary package hint: apt-xapian-index

A background silent update process shouldn't use 98% CPU. It makes system sluggish with no visible reason.
