Well, that certainly explains why I didn't find something. It's been
about a month since the last commit, though, so it's possible it won't
be ready for Natty at this rate. Or at least, not comfortably so.

I have contacted him through Alioth and asked to compare notes, though I
am already working with 1.8.1 (why not work with the latest version if
that's what you can get?). This may end up going through Debian first.

Title:
  [needs-packaging] asterisk-1.8

Status in “asterisk” package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: asterisk

Asterisk 1.8 is the newest and best-supported version of asterisk. Asterisk 1.6 will be phased out over the next year and will not receive anything but security updates past April 2011. This newest version is a LTS release and will be fully supported all throughout the next four years. Rather than continue with a version that is due to be phased out relatively soon, we should probably move up to what will likely become the standard.

Also, the asterisk package needs a major facelift. I have been working on a new package for Natty and will soon have one for Maverick in my PPA.
