Need guidance : Splash screen customization

i am newbie to gsoc
i am interested to do "ubuntu splash screen customization"
before i hacked the splash screen, modify the image in grub loading

i want the details about the "splash screen customization"
and i want the mentor to guide this project
*i know python
i will learn anything like gtk, qt to make customization GUI on "Splash
screen customization".
