Greetings, and thanks for volunteering to become a mentor for Ubuntu in
the Google Summer of Code 2007.

The student application date has been pushed out to Monday next week,
once that's past it'll be your job to rate, evaluate and comment on the
applications.

You can see the current list right now here:

	http://code.google.com/soc/ubuntu/open.html

In order to evaluate and rank fairly, we should agree on a common
ranking crieria. To get the ball rolling, here's some notes from
Matthias on the subject:

project criteria

- It must be very likely that a project ends up in an Ubuntu release.
By default, that should be the feisty+1 release; if we do have
restrictions for inclusion (for example version freeze), then maybe
  feisty+2 can be targeted.

Note that the completion date is August 20th.
Our theoretical feature freeze for +1 is August 9th.

These coincide reasonably well (within two weeks).

- The project should be relevant to Ubuntu developers or users; a
project
which has a broad audience is more welcome than a project that has
  just a handful of users.

- bitesize: the project must be completable in two months full work
time.
do not limit students, which do work harder/longer, but keep an eye on
  unreasonable sized projects.

- bitesize II: don't accept micro projects, or projects which require
substantially less work than two full months.

- state of the spec; are all relevant parts in? is it detailed enough,
or
  will it need adjustments later?

- can intermediate results be delivered or progress be measured well?
we have a mid-term evaluation for the project and need something to
  decide.

student criteria

- How involved is the student? Did he pick up the project idea on his
own?

- will the student have time? two months full time work are expected.

- Do we know the student as MOTU, contributor, from related projects?
