Hey guys,

>From the many years I spent doing end-user support for individuals as well
as businesses and groups at the University, I recognize that these folks
really need a real live person to stop by there office every now and then.
Most likely they do not (yet) have sufficient knowledge for our well-meaning
instructions to be of much value. Basically, they do not know enough to ask
effective questions. A year's worth of personalized attention, though, and
they should be good to continue on their own using community resources like
our site and the Ubuntu wiki.

This sort of support is exactly the mission of bringing Ubuntu to
non-specialists that is the reason for Ubuntu's existence. I would like to
see us reach the point where we can foster the growth of an Ubuntu Service
Business, right through to Pte. Ltd. status. We're not there yet, though.
But it is something to think about.

This is the second request for assistance to hit the mailing list this week.
Should we just leave it to each of us to offer the help we think we are able
to give? If so, perhaps the person who picks up on it should at least write
back to both the requester and the mailing list to indicate that he or she
has taken on the job. Perhaps we can set up an "odd jobs" board on our site
as well to match requestors to technicians.

The question "can we work with them on a weekend?" is a good one, btw,
Billy. Not only for us (because we're busy during the week) but also for a
business that may be very active during the weekdays. The war stories I
could tell about clients fussing and fidgeting over work falling behind
because I was working on their kit. *sigh*
