Hi,

Sorry a bit OT, but never mind keep it as future reference and discuss in
future.

It is a misconception that linux can't play games on lab computers. Games
exist in many forms. The ability to install games by users is a great
compromise of security as sys admin allow that. There's one exception, you
can't prevent people from playing flash games.

My school uses windows xp in labs even though it comes with vista
pre-installed. Some labs have dual boot but not much people use. One of the
problem is courseware package. Linux can't play elearning videos that are in
streaming windows media.

And the number one annoyance is the school system use m$ exchange ... Which
works well only on M$ Outlook and also M$ IE for the "ENHANCED FEATURES"
while other browsers will get "BASIC FEATURES", a great product to make
other browsers and systems look bad.

Most lecturers in my school uses .doc/.ppt on courses, which might not
nicely in OpenOffice.org. And worst still, some of them requires us to
submit assignments strictly to those formats. It's good if they strictly
suggest odf instead, more people will have more choice on open source
suites. Btw, the libraries in my school here all upgraded to M$ office 2007
this semester.

And labs still depend on windows due to some courses that requires
proprietary software which they didn't change. Examples like ms sql server
2005 and others. I can say if lecturers implement open source like mysql in
this case, more students will use open source products like mysql and
others.

Luckily the labs didn't upgrade to windows vista especially electronics,
because they still need the old software and hyperterminal which is removed
from windows vista.

We have just took over an Open Source Club, which can say to be super
inactive for almost three years. If you want to start one, find some
same-interest friends(Quite hard, some just need CCA points or so, just heck
care), and lecturers or so, and start one.

Majority of students here knows nuts cos they come from different countries.
India people might know, but china students do not know. And just a notice,
a lot might not know the top open source product, firefox.

Ideal approach should be those prominent managers or professionals in the
open source industries, can help to go to schools and educate the IT people,
lecturers, IT librarians in schools. I don't feel students are up to educate
them much. By changing the mindset, and knowledge of these people, they can
implement open source systems in schools, which is much more efficient than
changing the mindset of certain students, who might try for a while and
discard it, due to the schools heavily dependent on windows systems and
proprietary software.

There are Open Source/Linux Clubs in NTU(Recently revived)/NUS/SMU
I am thinking of an alliance of the clubs, which can share/collaborate
resources. And also be more organised too. Currently I saw, there are lack
of cooperation here and there, and a lot of last min stuff. And also new
clubs might face a lot of problems when starting up and might need a bit
help from external organisations or so. A simple seminar on how to start up
linux clubs in Singapore Schools, might help a lot to others, since a lot of
things new clubs don't know about it, what events to be held, where to find
resources, marketing resources and others.

And by the way, to say linux users groups can do well to spread linux might
be false. Most of the time, open source spread through events, but events
one or two times per 6/12 months? Looks a bit inactive? And the penetration
rate is not high also. This is one of the problems school linux clubs.

For me, I don't have reference what activities for OpenSource Days or Events
we need to hold in club. Which companies to look for? These are some
difficulties of new club. Some open source clubs in school might have 1 or
couple people which need much great assistance than this, we all know this
is the minority factor.

And before we spread ubuntu linux well, we need to make people know of open
source tools well first also, else I will foreseen a lot of problems and
will result, run once, and uninstall/throw away the next moment.

Btw, suhaw: he is referring to engineering school of temasek polytechnic

Thanks, if we would keep this as reference, and chat after software freedom
day.
Or else, just private email first.

Regards
John
