I think that getting a wiki done is not going to be a tough job. We are not expecting it to be a mega size project but just some small contribution to it each week or so. So fellow member of the group can play around and tweak their computer to optimise the performance. Just like yesterday that I have gotten the anti-aliasing for my amsn and the entire experience with the software has change. Now it looks so cool just like a windows messenger:P Also we can have a 'helpline' email that links to the mailing list. So new users can somehow ask their questions and get responded by the loco team. As I use ubuntu as a workstation for scientific research and stuff, of course I have a biased view to enable all scientific softwares installed smoothly into the distro. I felt that with forums and guides and mailing lists everywhere , another wiki won't matter much. We can , of course , have wiki.ubuntu.sg if we think its a good idea. I apologise for that. I am planning to go back to school this year so I should have more time on hand playing with the site or having meetings and so on. And yes , I do agree that if we want to be recognised loco team , we gotta do a lot of things , starting with the site. Actually , the question is do we need the site at all ? If so then for what purpose ? We already have a site at ubuntu.com loco teams page. Perhaps we can come up with some ideas ?? :P regards billy > > XP > > On 3/2/07, Maung Myat Thu @ Billy Aung Myint wrote: > > On Friday 02 March 2007 19:41, Chen Xiangpeng wrote: > > > Heya, > > > > > > IMO, most of the guides for ubuntu is probably available @ > > > http://www.ubuntuguide.org, so a wiki ain't really useful consider our > > > small size. However, you are the team leader. You should have your say. Also there are more senior members in the group that will have better suggestion. I think it might be good if you can gather a team of yours to achieve this goal. You can never clap with just one hand. This will also ensure you have enough time to oversee the entire progress and get the necessary things done:) P.S. I m not sure if it is just me. But whenever I try to reply to the mailing list, I always end up replying just to the sender. Just like the last mail. So probably we should change the way the mailing list is sent and replied. Privacy in a certain way is good. I don't mind to review my email but there might be people who don't:) Keep up the good work.CiaoHarris _________________________________________________________________ Connect to the next generation of MSN Messenger  http://imagine-msn.com/messenger/launch80/default.aspx?locale=en-us&source=wlmailtagline -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Most singaporeans speak english and they might just find it more beneficial to go to the main.We do need a team to ensure things are going fine but it seems that there are only 3 active members so far.:P Any suggestion? Thats why most forums fail. Unless the topic is large enough , most of the traffic will go to the main site only. With Ubuntu , the topic isn't that large and most of the hacks and tips can be found on the main forum. Another thing is that Singapore's small population. A loco team in Beijing , 15 million or so , is about 3 times larger than the whole of Singapore. And thats just one city. China Ubuntu Team has potential membership of 1+ billion people. They also have opportunities that we don't have. Volunteering opportunities. They can help out with local schools to teach IT skills. Thats a very good way to attract members and get a good press release. Here , the situation is different. Where can we help? Almost every homes have computers. Every schools have computer classes loaded with Windows. All are supported and controlled by MOE. So our hands are tied to online only... My graphics card is 6600GT. Not top-end, but not vanilla either :p Right now I'm using the Nvidia download rather than the nvidia-glx package, which means I manually recompile the kernel interface every time I up kernel version (not just during dist-upgrade). Been using Ubuntu from the Breezy days, but only mainly started using it as my main OS since Dapper. I run it on a DIY desktop machine with dual-boot to WinXP as I still need my games and the synchronization modules for the SplashSuite series of programs that I use on my Palm OS device. Also too much in love with Winamp and the easy integration it has with my iPod and my networked harddrive. As for the release of Feisty beta, I am itching to upgrade to it and test it out, but I'm quite wary of messing with all my little tweaks and hacks, especially of those to my xorg.conf file which includes stuff like getting my extra mouse buttons to work and more screen resolution options. I am also using the nvidia-glx package (9746) which now doesn't break X windows with each kernel upgrade and have beryl working great and fast with it. Still lots of Feisty beta problems with Nvidia being thrown around on the forums, which just makes me want to bite the bullet and wait for stable release. The itch to upgrade doesn't go away though.... Regards Colin "Falchion" On 3/27/07, Maung Myat Thu @ Billy Aung Myint wrote: > > On Monday 26 March 2007 12:28, Kerwin Khu wrote: > > Hmms ... Is there going to be more proprietary drivers/codecs included in the new version since the different partnership that Ubuntu has taken up? Falchion: Does ubuntu not working well with your palm (Kpilot, Jpilot?) and Ipod (amarmok, banshee etc)? I can't say for sure but it seems to work with my palm out of the box (Sony Clie) and I think I got my ipod sync as well. I don't play games though so i don't say dual boot is no good. It is just some of the specticulation about having better hardware software and hopefully the new kernel can pick up some of the minor errors that I have seen from an edgy installation out of the box. Of course, I have a machine which I usually put in the latest ubuntu for trial and basically playing around with new softwares. It is just me. I have no complain of edgy in fact. That's quite a strange psycho that when I get a stable OS and I am looking for trouble:P or I should say that I am quite confident with the ubuntu development that I have confidence in the feisty official release. Never will I think I will have such urge from switching between XP and Vista. I rather use the 64bit XP than Vista for my new workstation. I happen to do the upgrade because I am between sems in my part time degree program and I can risk the breakage. It'll be worse for me if I upgrade on 19th April as I will be having lessons by then. New stuff: The new stuff ain't really so new to me, I had the network manager app installed since dapper, been using restricted drivers by default to get my 3d card as well as wireless working. I also had those codecs installed using automatix long ago. As for the 3d desktop, I believe most of you guys here would have tried beryl/compiz long ago, so that's nothing new too. So for you seasoned users of Ubuntu, the new stuff probably won't be apparent to you, as they are more tuned towards the new user Summary: Unless you really wanna try the new KVM module, you can prolly stick to edgy till april 19th :-) Ps: Hey Billy, you wanna convert ubuntu.sg to a blog/info page? I think we can promote the mailing list there, as well as put up a few links to the public and some introduction and recruitment info. If we can promote this site enough, I think we might get enough people to get ubuntu-sg to be officially recognised as a full loco team :) XP On 3/28/07, Maung Myat Thu @ Billy Aung Myint wrote: > > On Wednesday 28 March 2007 22:46, Harris Ngan wrote: > > Welcome to the club. The problem is some programs I use which are Palm/Windows only, such as SplashID, which is password manager which automatically updates on sync. I have been slowly migrating my data into Revelation on Ubuntu, but I miss being able to have it auto-update on sync. As for my ipod, most of the tracks where copied over using windows, and while Rhythmbox does fine in reading the database, using it to copy new tracks into the ipod seems to mess up the songs that are already in there. I suspect if I was to totally wipe out my ipod of tracks and reload them from Rhythmbox, I wouldn't have this problem but that seems pretty heavy-handed. As for new features in Feisty: -migration-assistant: I think this quite the cool feature. I know most of us wouldn't really need it, but I was quite impressed with Mozilla Firefox and it's migration of stuff from IE for example, so if Ubuntu can get something that works as easily and fast as that, we would be better able to win over more users, much like what Firefox has been able to do. -New Gnome: Always good to have. Tomboy improvements, Disk Usage Analyzer, new Deskbar and Seahorse. -Network Manager: Got to see it "official" -New Kernel: Also good to have just for the little hardware quirks. For example I still can't get my USB keyboard to fully turn off all power on shutdown. -New Xorg: Gets better with each version. Highly awaited. -New stable versions of stuff in Main and Universe: Also always good to have, to scratch that "Latest Software!" itch.
