[Ubuntu-SG] Global proxy command?

Hi all,
I use my XUbuntu distro in VMWare, and depending on where I am, I need
to set up the proxy server so that I can access outside of my work intranet.
This is easy enough whilst using applications such as Firefox, but how
do I do this via the command line? (i.e. globally)
For example, I work in Temasek Polytechnic and the proxy server here is
tp.edu.sg, port 80.
How do I specify this to work from the command line, so that 'apt-get'
will work?
Thanks for the advance info, - sorry as I'm a newbie to XUbuntu.
