I was upgrading a headless unit from Ubuntu server 14.04 to 16.04 when I accidentally hit Ctrl-C. The result was the process aborted and wouldn't restart ("another process is running"). I searched the web and came up
with a few possibilities. I removed the lock and lock-frontend files, at this point 'dpkg --configure -a' appeared to re-launch the process which proceeded but ended with errors. I made some configuration file changes and rebooted, the initial Ubuntu startup
screen didn't even appear.

drastic approach and order of things I should try. Thanks for your help.
