Another user commented on this bug (after a 2 year period of radio
silence) confirming that it's still an issue.  I pinged Andreas about
it.

The bug seems valid, and there's an upstream bug in which people say
that reverting a specific commit fixes the crash, but I'm not confident
backporting such fix given that upstream hasn't reviewed it yet.  I left
a comment explaining this, marked the bug as Triaged and subscribed
ubuntu-server, but it will stay in the backlog for now.
