Updated cron?

Is a newer version of cron (or an alternative) available for Ubuntu?  The reason I ask is that another distribution has a 2012 version that has a MAILFROM capability.  Both Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04 use 4th Berkeley Distribution dated 2010 where mail comes from a pre-defined entity.  This is becoming important as efforts to make email less malware-prone are causing email systems to become more picky about what they allow.
