You may also consider using a minimal image [1]. An example usage to
launch one with lxc:

$ lxc remote add --protocol simplestreams ubuntu-minimal
https://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/minimal/releases/
$ lxc launch ubuntu-minimal:xenial
