10.04.1 LTS - /dev/usb/lp0 disappears when I print or run hp-check -t

Hi folks

I posted this on forums and got nothing so any pointers would be gratefully
accepted.

I cannot find anything that talks specifically about this issue and I'm sure
it's a simple thing if you know what you're doing on the drivers. I doubt it
has to do with the printer itself - I hope I am not being dorf and missing
something obvious.

I am running 10.04.1 LTS on generic hw (no X GUI).
I have a HP laserjet color 1600 connected via USB
I installed HPLIP and ran hp-check and cleaned up all the dependancies.
Then - as per http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1536862.html -

I removed hplip (apt-get remove hp*) and
downloaded latest from

	http://sourceforge.net/projects/hpli...lip-3.10.9.run
<http://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/files/hplip/3.10.9/hplip-3.10.9.run>

ran ./hplip-3.10.9.run --nox11
and ran through all the options sucessfully.
Last error was that the hp executables were still running and I needed to
reboot.

I rebooted and ran hp-setup -i
No errors (including plugin required for this printer).

Now the printer is detected
the USB port detected (as /dev/usb/lp0 and /dev/usblp0)
the print queue is setup as HPcolor
-- all set to go --

I run hp-testpage and immediately both /dev/usb/lp0 and /dev/usblp0
disappear and the page does not print.

If I disconnect the printer and then replug it in /dev/usb/lp0 and
/dev/usblp0 are back.

and so it repeats. The printer queue getting longer.

ANY ideas?
