The Servlet and JSP API's are designed to be backwards compatible so you
should be able to run applications developed on Tomcat 5.5 on Tomcat 6.

I would go for 6 over 5.5 as generally the optimizations and hence
performance improves with each release of Tomcat so the latest available
would be best.

As Clint points out making use of the tomcat6 package in Lucid would get
you the benefit of Ubuntu managed patches for critical issues (and there
have been some!)
