after installing ubuntu-server, HDD's are not detected in AHCI mode

this is holding up the project, so any ideas would be appreciated, even
if it is just a suggestion of a better place to ask.

i know it doesn't seem ubuntu-related, so i asked on the sun forums[1].
 no one has helped me there either.  i also asked on another random
forum[2] and i got some suggestions but still no solution.
