SWAP Question?

No. A modest amount of swap may permit the OS to work itself out of memory
contention. A large amount of swap permits the OS to dig itself into deeper
and deeper trouble.

The defaults are rarely an issue. On one server of mine:

root at galax:/var/lib/mysql/lsnet# free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 1555548 1222464 333084 0 91036 726672
-/+ buffers/cache: 404756 1150792
Swap: 3028212 68304 2959908

300MB would be plenty.
