This is the error reported in the logs:

grep: /etc/mysql/: No such file or directory
(...)
mysqld: Can't read dir of '/etc/mysql/conf.d/' (Errcode: 2 - No such file or directory)
mysqld: [ERROR] Fatal error in defaults handling. Program aborted!

It's odd to not have the /etc/mysql directory in your system.

>From your dpkg history, I can see that you installed and removed mysql
and other related packages like phpmyadmin several times over. I
couldn't reproduce this error, so I suggest you start fresh, and then,
if it happens again, please show us the steps you took so we can try to
reproduce it.
