This is the error reported in the logs:
ERROR: Unable to start MySQL server:
mysqld: Can't read dir of '/etc/mysql/conf.d/' (Errcode: 2 - No such file or directory)
Do you recall what actions you took with mysql that would erase its
configuration directory? It needs that directory to work.

and we don't have the logs from when it first happened.
