I can see evidence that clustering is not enabled in the update, but I
cannot see that evidence in the original trusty version. The smbd -b
output in that older samba version doesn't mention clustering
capabilities.

If I use these ./configure options to 4.3.1:

                --builtin-libraries=replace,ccan,samba-cluster-support \
                --with-cluster-support \

Then the build produces extra cluster related files, like usr/bin/onnode
and usr/share/man/man7/ctdb.7, but these come from the ctdb package in
ubuntu.

Do you have ctdb installed, configured and running on both SAN1 and
SAN2, and the same version?

In trusty it is:
  Version table:
     2.5.1+debian0-1 0
        500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty/universe amd64 Packages

It will take me some time to setup ctdb to verify this behavior.

At least, I can verify that smbd does NOT start with the updated package
4.3.11 if clustering is set to "yes" in smb.conf.
