@ondrej I agree to some degree, as it would be reasonable to run xenial
under the hood, not only because of the base OS but the rest of the web
stack, too.

And as already stated, as PHP5.6/7 are supported from PHP to almost the
same EOL time now, so it's not about "please support old unmaintained
software for us" ;) As Trusty includes PHP 5.5, that would be more of a
problem as to have 5.6 & 7 as options on a new platform with support
until 2021. Installing trusty mid- to end-2016 feels the same as the
precise/trusty thingy we had to endure the last 4 years.

That's why I'm just throwing that idea into the room. I know what we
have to do otherwise, but just wanted to have a shot at perhaps brighten
up the situation :)
