Actually, this whole problem has been fixed in Debian unstable about 1
year ago.

mysql-workbench (6.2.3+dfsg-7) unstable; urgency=low

  * Demoted "virtual-mysql-client" to Recommends; added "mysql-client"
    as first alternative: "mysql-client | virtual-mysql-client".

This problem is fixed in vivid and beyond.  We should backport a fix to
trusty.

** No longer affects: mariadb-10.0 (Ubuntu)

       Status: Confirmed => Fix Released
