Similar Problem with BackupPC un Ubuntu 14.04:

Removing "ssl start_tls" from /etc/ldap.conf allows BackupPC to start.
Both applicaions using perl:

perl 5, version 18, subversion 2 (v5.18.2) built for x86_64-linux-gnu-
thread-multi
