Public bug reported:

I am trying to extend the SNMP agent using pass_persist, but when trying
to SET a value of type string the operation fails.

This problem is seems to be the same that is already reported in
upstream (http://sourceforge.net/p/net-snmp/bugs/2442/). There is a
patch that fixed this issue there, but it appears that patch is not
applied in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

I downloaded the package source code with "apt-get source snmpd" and I
could confirm that the patch is not applied (assuming the version
downloaded by apt-get source is the same that apt-get installs).

System Release: Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS
Package Version: 5.7.2~dfsg-8.1ubuntu3

** Affects: net-snmp (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
