You might want to try:

sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get build-essential

./configure;make;make install "modules"

AND THEN

compile openvswitch


Parameterizing libmodules with respect to dkms (which supports dynamism in the kernel, anyways) could add compile-time redundancy and contribute to the bad return status. The above algorithm worked out well for us.
