Hi James,
The work-around you suggest works, I've used it many times. It does not
cure the root cause though. The problem comes back after each reboot.
It seems the root cause is mongodb being started by both
/etc/init.d/mongodb as well as the newer upstart mechanism. They behave
slightly differently when it comes to ownership of the lock file.
If I remove /etc/rc*d/*mongodb, remove /var/lib/mongodb/mongod.lock and
then reboot, the problem is gone.
I don't know how and when /etc/init.d/mongodb was linked to /etc/rc*d.
Perhaps when installing MongoDB by means of a Chef recipe downloaded from the Chef community cookbooks.
