Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

I've always taken this behaviour to be intentional. In your case, I'd
expect your script to sort out what it wants to do with the paths, and
then call smbclient appropriately. The "dirname" and "basename" shell
commands can help you with this.

If you still consider this a bug, then I can appreciate that, but I
don't think it would make sense for Ubuntu to diverge from upstream on
this. So, the appropriate action would be to verify that the upstream
source exhibits the same behaviour by building samba directly from
upstream sources, and if it does then to consult upstream for their
opinion. If Ubuntu's behaviour is different, then please report this as
I think this would be a bug in Ubuntu's packaging of samba.

Since this isn't a priority to resolve in Ubuntu itself, and a
workaround is possible, I'm setting the Importance for this to Low.

** Changed in: samba (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided => Low
