Public bug reported:

I was loged in as a user authenticated remotely with an nfs home who had sudo access. aptitude safe-upgrade froze on nis(or at least it took more than a couple of hours to configure)
Killed aptidude and loged in as a local user(the system claimed to no longer recognize the remote user).
Tried dpkg-reconfigure and froze on nis again
Currently trying to remove nis (sudo apt-get remove nis) and for about 20' on
