Huh, interesting.  Your log has this line

2012-07-19 10:16:10.235911 7f9e20d22780 1 mon.a at -1(probing) e1 copying
mon. key from old db to external keyring

which I wonder what it means. Maybe it's plucking a key from a previous
cephx-enabled install from an undisclosed location?

Anyway, it certainly sounds like talking to upstream is the next logical
step.
