Thanks for taking the time to report this bug in Ubuntu.

I'm using exactly the same version of openvpn found in precise on
quantal and I don't see this issue; the pid is created with the VPN
connection name correctly.

Which version of openvpn are you using?  Note that running the following
command:

   sudo apport-bug 1023325

will automatically append the requested information to this bug report.

Marking 'Incomplete' pending your response - please set back to new when
you have provided the requested information.
