This looks like a local configuration problem, rather than a bug in
Ubuntu, so I'm marking this bug as Invalid.

Specifically, during the upgrade you used your modified version of
my.cnf rather than the package's version, so errors from this point may
be due to your custom configuration rather than a bug in the package.
