Hi Jacques, thanks for filing the bug report.

Here is the relevant error:

Setting up slapd (2.4.28-1.1ubuntu4.1) ...
  Backing up /etc/ldap/slapd.d in /var/backups/slapd-2.4.28-1.1ubuntu4... done.
 * Starting OpenLDAP slapd        
[fail]
invoke-rc.d: initscript slapd, action "start" failed.


looks like slapd failed to start. Can you perhaps try looking in /var/log/syslog for any evidence as to why?
