Public bug reported:

When trying to run mysql, I repeatedly got the error:
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (111)

Since I couldn't seem to find any way to fix that problem, I attempted to remove and reinstall mysql:
>sudo apt-get remove mysql-server mysql-client mysql-common
>sudo apt-get install mysql-server mysql-client mysql-common

I'm running Ubuntu 11.10, and trying to install the default mysql, which
seems to be 5.1.58-ubuntu1.

I expected mysql to install.  I got this error:
