I cleared away all old samba logs, then ran the command "apt-get install samba". This gave the following messages:
========================
root at garfield:/var/log/samba# apt-get install samba
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
samba is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
1 not fully installed or removed.
After this operation, 0 B of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]?
Setting up samba (2:3.5.8~dfsg-1ubuntu2.3) ...
start: Job failed to start
invoke-rc.d: initscript nmbd, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing samba (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
samba
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
========================
The directory /var/log/samba remained empty
I tried the command "start -v nmbd" but this only gave "start: Job
failed to start"
/var/log/syslog showed:
Sep 1 07:53:18 garfield init: nmbd pre-start process (28123) terminated with status 1
