Thanks guys. I didn't realise the versions all had to be in sync.
After reinstalling saslauthd 2.1.23 i had to edit /etc/default/saslauthd
and change my OPTIONS parameter to get everything working again.
In my case I had set my instance up according to
http://www.howtoforge.com/virtual-users-and-domains-with-postfix-
ubuntu-7.10-p3nwhich shows how long this has been working for; Ubuntu
7.10 was that Hoary or Gutsy?
Anywiay I had to reset the OPTIONS parameter of /etc/default/saslauthd
to;
OPTIONS="-c -m /var/spool/postfix/var/run/saslauthd -r"
Thanks again.
